The proposal treats the Metro North viaduct above as a unique urban asset - a canopy for decidedly "local" public spaces resisting the common phenomenon of constituent displacement that accompanies gentrification.&nbsp; Programmable public spaces constantly shift to accommodate a myriad of uses: docking stations for food trucks or outdoor cooking; seating that becomes lighting for evening events; deployable canopies that provide temporal shelter for fairs and markets. Craft and artisanship are privileged first and foremost in both circulation and programmed spaces. The programmed sculpture stair linking varied programs across six stories spaces themselves are defined by unique material palettes. Illuminated copper and wood bands, reminiscent of the Casa Cruz London location, envelop formal dining rooms. Members lounges with plush modular upholstered wall panels are aligned beneath a custom illuminated reeded glass and copper grid ceiling. public bar areas, and semi-public dining rooms. A new geometrically-exuberant stair – inspired by the original curvatures of a pre-existing stair – tether the various programs together across six stories. The architectural language is implemented throughout with custom-designed elements that acknowledge the style of art deco, privedging the objectification of craft and enabling a performance-like service structure. Service unfolds through the use of custom carts &amp; trollies that conceal points of service, copper gantries, wine racks and metal and glass liquor shelves. The project surgically alters the existing kitchen and bathroom core to create a new informal eating and study area. A double row of kitchen cabinetry captures the extra height for storage. The post-and-beam system, mahogany window walls, and infill panels were precut and fabricated in a factory in Acton, Massachusetts. The components were brought to the site in a flatbed truck and erected to create a weather tight shell. The exterior cladding and interior finishes were completed on site. Corridors now double as both public space and infrastructure for art movement. HE looked to the architecture of the existing infrastructure – ductwork, conduits, and their correspondingly complex and rich geometries - as inspiration for a new aesthetic for the space; rather than obfuscating these requirements, HE celebrates the infrastructure and by extension the museum’s staff who engage the operations of the institution. Wayfinding, material, and spatial design elements borrow the language of diagonals and curves.
